Acrobatic Display Wows Students
05/11/2007

Latest NewsLatest NewsLatest News ACROBATIC DISPLAY WOWS STUDENTS Students at East Norfolk Sixth Form College were treated to the unusual sight of people spinning on their heads in their normally sedate study area last Wednesday! As part of Norfolk Black history Month, the Great Yarmouth International Association organised a special event for the sixth formers, which included demonstrations of African hairstyling, film screenings, a very tasty African buffet and an exhibition on Norfolk’s historical links with the slave trade. But it was the stunning display of Capoeira, an African-Brazilian fusion of fighting, dance and acrobatics which got the students most excited. The display mixed a lecture about the slave trade between Europe, Africa and the Americas with a hands–on taster of this incredible physical art form. Students were eager to have a go, and pretty soon the whole study area was a blur of movement and drumbeats. Student Ricky Gibbons said: “The event was a real eye-opener. I found the whole performance and the interaction awesome. I learnt loads about slavery and why so many countries around the world speak English, Spanish and Portuguese. I really hope we have more events like these.”
